Apple Explains Why Wi-Fi Assist, The New Feature Of iOS 9 Is Not Eating Your Mobile Data

Few days back, we heard about the Wi-Fi Assist feature of iOS 9 and we also heard that it could make your mobile bill double if you are on a limited data plan.

Now Apple has disclosed more information on this feature and how it works. The main purpose of  Wi-Fi Assist is to help your phone to use the best connection. For example, if your smartphone is connected to Wi-fi but the signal is very weak, your phone will automatically switch to your cellular connection.

So, no doubt it’s a great feature but a few weeks ago it got some backlash when some users started complaining about more data usage than expected after updating to iOS 9. However, this problem is not occurring because of the Wi-Fi Assist feature, it’s because of the iOS9 settings. Apple also has created a support page to present how this feature works and when it does not.

According to Apple:

  • Wi-Fi Assist will not switch to your phone cellular data if you are data roaming.
  • It does not activate with those third-party apps that download attachment, stream video or audio, as they may use large amount of data.
  • And this feature only works when there are some apps running in the foreground, it does not activate with background downloading of content.

Apple admits that your phone could use more data than normal because of Wi-Fi Assist but the amount is higher by only a small percentage.
