How to fix “Internet may not be available” on Android

Android OS is one of the most used operating systems, but that doesn’t mean it is flawless. You may experience issues and errors, one of which is “Internet may not be available.” And if that’s what is bothering you, the solutions that could fix the issue are listed below.

Ways to fix “Internet may not be available”

Here are the suggestions on how to get rid of the error.

Toggle Wi-Fi and Airplane mode

We always suggest starting with the simplest things. Go to Settings, and tap on Network & Internet option/Connections (depending on your phone model). Then, turn off Wi-Fi, wait a couple of seconds and turn it back on.

You can also go to Settings > Network & Internet option/Connections > enable Airplane mode, wait for a minute then turn it back off.

Restart your phone and your router

The next thing to do is restart your smartphone and do the same with your router.

Make sure the date & time are correct

You need to ensure that the date and time on your device are correct.

Forget the Wi-Fi network and connect again

Go to Settings, tap Wi-Fi, tap your Wi-Fi network, then tap forget this network. Restart your phone. Go back to Settings > Wi-Fi, find your network, tap on it, add a password and connect.

Reset network settings

The steps may vary a bit, depending on the device you have. Go to Settings > System and updates > Reset, and tap Reset network settings. Tap Reset network settings at the bottom of the screen. Confirm your action. The other way, open Settings > General management > Reset > Reset network settings.

Update the software

To update the software, go to Settings > System > Software Update and tap Check for Updates. If there is an update, tap Download and Install. Here are the other ways to update the software, depending on your phone model.

  • Settings > Software update > Download and install
  • Settings > System > System update
  • Settings > About device > Software update

Wipe cache partition

  • Turn off your Android phone.
  • Once your device is off, press and hold the Power and volume up buttons.
  • Keep holding these buttons until you see the Recovery mode
  • Use the Volume buttons to navigate to the Wipe cache partition and use the Power button to confirm
  • Highlight the option Reboot system now using the Volume buttons
  • Use the Power button to confirm.

Connect to Wi-Fi from Safe mode

On Android, third-party apps may create a problem, and to be sure that’s the case, you can boot your phone into Safe mode. If everything works fine, one of the third-party apps is the problem, so you will have to remove the apps one by one until the problem is resolved or factory reset your phone.

  • Press and hold the Power key
  • Tap and hold the Power button when it shows up on the screen
  • “Reboot to Safe mode” will appear, tap OK
  • Your device will boot into Safe mode
  • You will see Safe mode in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Factory reset

If one of the third-party apps is causing the problem, or you tried all the things above, but nothing seems to be working, it is time for a factory reset. Make sure you have a backup of your data. Here's what you need to do (note that steps may vary depending on the Android device you have):

  • Open the Settings app from the Home screen
  • Scroll down and tap System & Updates
  • Tap Reset
  • Next, tap Reset phone
  • Enter your PIN, password, or pattern
  • Tap Reset phone to confirm the action.

You will have to set up your phone as a new device.
