LG Display Has Paused the Manufacturing of LCD Panels for iPhones

If you were in awe of the Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) panels on the iPhones, you have to thank LG for it. Yes, you read it right. For a very long time, LG’s subsidiary company LG Display was responsible for manufacturing LCD panels for iPhone. As things stand today, Apple might have to look for another company to manufacture LCD panels for them as LG Display has decided to halt the production of LCD panels for iPhones.

News of this nature could make some people believe that there was a fallout between the two companies which resulted in them deciding not to work with each other. But, that’s not the case here. The factory at which LG Display used to manufacture these panels is about to be converted into a site for manufacturing display panels for automobiles.

According to a report published in TheElec, instead of manufacturing LCD panels for iPhones, the factory would be used extensively to manufacture display panels for automobiles. LG took the decision of halting the manufacturing of LCD panels for iPhones in the third quarter of 2020.

Though the company has issued no statement to this effect, trade experts are suggesting that LG didn’t think much before taking this step as they were anyway not reaping huge profits by manufacturing LCD panels for iPhones. They state that while LG was compelled to halt the production because the factory was going to be used for a different purpose, it foresaw no real harm in doing it.

If you study the specifications of the latest iPhone lineup by Apple, you will realize that the phones no longer feature LCD panels manufactured by LG. The phones now have Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) panels. Apple expects the sale of iPhones featuring OLED panels to go far beyond the sale of LCD panel models this year.

A couple of models like the iPhone SE 2020 continue to feature LCD panels but now, they are being outsourced from companies like Sharp and JDI. The AP3 line of Apple will now concentrate on manufacturing display panels for automobiles. These panels will produce low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) thin-film transistors (TFT). LTPS TFT has proved to be a more viable substitute to the amorphous silicon (a-Si) TFT panels that LG Display uses. The LTPS TFT panels are also extensively used in car models that have been launched in recent times.
