YouTube Gets First iOS Update From Apple Since the Implementation of Apple’s New Privacy Rules

On Friday, the YouTube app received an update for iOS from Google. This was the first-ever update the app received after Apple implemented a new privacy policy under which developers have to share information regarding data handling and management and the privacy of users. According to notes published by Google, the upgraded version of YouTube includes features that contribute to its overall performance and repair solutions for bugs and other technical issues.

A page on the App Store shows a list of the kind of data that is used to track and derive further information about the users. It also points you towards the exact information that is linked to the identity of the user. As per a report in MacRumors, this ‘privacy disclosure’ update was included in the description section of YouTube last month. All this was done in accordance with the guidelines issued by Apple.

Many of the apps owned by Google have still not been updated as of early December was when Apple started facing the requirement for privacy ‘nutrition labels’. Some of these apps which are yet to receive an update include Chrome, Gmail, Google Drive, Google Maps, and the flagship app by Google. Apple’s program is aimed towards offering its users a more informed insight into how their information is put to use by developers.

The guidelines compel an app maker to reveal the kind of data it is collecting on its own or with the help of a third-party app. The app maker must also share details about how it plans to use that information.

Similar to the policies laid down by the App Store in the past, apps have permission to feature on the store without displaying their privacy labels. However, the newly updated policies will be implemented when the time comes to submit the updates formally. A bunch of critics has also speculated about Google eluding the privacy disclosure causing a delay in the implementation of the standard updates.

Google was quick to deny the claims made against it when it spoke about its plans to launch an update for the iOS app suite in the next few weeks. ‘Overly optimistic’ is what its critics called the timeline.

A couple of days ago, Gmail users were warned about the currently used version of the iOS being obsolete. It also stated that this particular version does not feature the latest security features by Google. Google quickly sprang into action and eliminated this alert by updating its servers.
